Fossil wood parquet: lifestyle and luxury from centuries of history
Particularly sought after by those who like unique pieces and luxury furnishings, fossil wood parquet (also known as bog oak or swamp oak) is a niche product that is increasingly appreciated and requested. This wood is obtained from the processing of logs that have remained submerged for a very long time: it shows characteristics of uniqueness and non replicability and this make every installation exclusive, unrepeatable and full of a charm that makes a floor made with this material one of the objects of desire of many jetset celebrities.
Fossil wood is used and appreciated since a long time for the creation of jewels, design pieces and furnishing accessories: it is also used for the realization of exclusive quality floors. Not many companies are capable to offer it in the catalog, among the available parquet choices. In fact, the special nature of this type of wood requires large research operations to find the right places where it is present and special extraction methods, as well as processing operations. Lignum Venezia - thanks to decades of experience in the field of timber research and sale – is proud of having this precious proposal among its catalog products
Since the beginning, amongst the identifying features of Lignum Venetia philosophy, there is the constant desire to create exciting products, for the quality of the material, for the feeling to the touch, for the hand-made works and the finishigns. When it comes to fossil woods the emotion is amplified even more by the awareness of a material which carries the signs and features of centuries of history and memory: the wood has changed its own consistency, color, hardness and it has become something absolutely rare and precious.
The solutions of fossil wood parquet proposed by Lignum Venetia are mainly made with bog oak (also called fossil oak or Bog Oak): it is a wood product that comes from the use of ancient oak trunks that remained submerged for many centuries under the bed of rivers or lakes, under the pressure of water and mud for centuries, in an anaerobic and protected environment. This means that all the chemical and physical reactions have modified its appearance and structure, time after time. The fossil oak has an intense natural coloring, which ranges from the soft and warm tones of chestnut honey to a natural black that reminds of Ebony, with platinum and ruby veins.
Another wood available is the “Marsh Ash” (or fossil Ash). Trunks are extracted in the same way as the Bog Oak, but it is much more rare to find and in much smaller quantities. After thousands of years in the subsoil the “work” of sand, water, minerals, earth and pressure, the fossil ash presents a light color, almost white and with incredible shades that remind the veining of the marble. This is why it is also called Marble Ash.
Finally - precious among the precious - the rarest between the fossil threes, Lignum Venetia can also propose the Marsh Elm. Unlike the other two, the fossil Elm generally comes from peat bogs, marshes and river beds. It is sought and retrive in the same way as for the Bog Oak and the Marble Ash, but it is extremely rare.
Lignum Venetia Fossil wood are finished with the same natural oils that are used for all the wooden floors: completely toxic-free and highly reliable finishings. For Fossil wood floors LIngum Venetia uses neutral (transparent) oils, so to leave unaltered and visible the result of a millennial evolution. The oils used by Lignum Venetia protect the floors and make them more resistant to wear and stains. However, all those little precautions that protect it from scratches and resistant stains are therefore necessary. Always use a well-wrung mop, to avoid water stagnation. Use only lukewarm water; when the water is too hot it may damage the finishing. Do not use aggressive chemical products because they may damage the finishing.
Fossil woods have an incredible story to tell: for thousands of years they have remained buried and preserved in the underground, the value of this magic past is added to the market value, which is given by the rarity of this material. It is not an abstract concept but it is clearly visible in every knot, in every vein of color and in the intense tones. This is the reason why Lignum Venetia fossil bog woods exert a strong fascination both on the people who like exclusivity as well as on those who love the unmatchable aesthetics features and beauty
